Vranov nad Topľou is a district town located in the Prešov Region with 22465 inhabitants (31.12.2018). Originally an ancient Zemplín town, it is located in the eastern part of Slovakia, in the area of Upper Zemplín. Most of the city is located on a plain in the Topľa river basin. It is a starting point to Slanské vrchy, which rises in the vicinity, where there is the possibility of hiking, biking and cross-country skiing in winter. The highest peak of the Šimonka mountain, which is also the highest point of the Vranov nad Topľou district, is sought after by tourists. The historical landmark of the city is the late Gothic Roman Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. The main industry is the wood and textile industry.

Multi-purpose water work, resp. water reservoir, the construction of which began in February 1962 and was completed in December 1967. It is also called the Green Pearl of Eastern Slovakia. The Domaša reservoir is located in the Ondava Highlands in the valley of the Ondava River, below which is a small buffer reservoir Malá Domaša. The water reservoir covers two thirds of the area in the Vranov nad Topľou district, only the northern part extends into the Stropkov district. The whole reservoir has a great water management significance with a multifunctional character: regulation of water inflows into the East Slovakian lowlands, storage of utility water and use for recreational purposes. The area of the reservoir is 14.22 km2, length 14 km, maximum width 4 km, maximum depth 25 m.

From the geomorphological point of view, the territory of the village is part of the Beskydy foothills, its part - Hanušovská pahorkatina. The Slanské vrchy hills extend here, stretching to the southwest of the town. The cadastral area has an area of 14.3 km. The lower altitude is on the bank of the Topla at the confluence with the Volľanský stream (Lužiny) 158 m.n.m. The center of the village is located at an altitude of 190 m above sea level. and the highest point in the area is the locality below Stavenec at the foot of Slanské vrchy 455 m.n.m. The Hanušoviec area is drained by the river Topľa with its tributaries Hlibovec, Hrabovec, Hanušovský and Medziansky potok.

Čičva castle

The ruins of a castle from the 13th century standing on a wooded promontory of the Beskydy foothills in the Mernícká pahorkatina subunit, above the village of Sedliská. The castle was built in the years 1309 - 1316 as a guard fortress on the trade route to Poland. It is located south of the Veľká Domaša reservoir at an altitude of 205 m above sea level. m. From the road you can see less of it, although it is located on a low hill, but with a steep, which is overgrown with beautiful old trees. The castle complex is freely accessible for visitors. There are distant views from the castle hill. The castle was damaged by Rákoci's last uprising in 1711 and has been a ruin ever since. In 1963 it was declared a cultural monument.

Basilica Minor of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary

Although this basilica is not very conspicuous from the outside, it boasts a beautiful interior decoration in the Baroque style. The church is the most valuable historical monument of the city. In terms of architectural development, it is a type of late Gothic monumental sacral building. Today's uniform Baroque interior decoration dates from the first half of the 18th century. Part of the interior is decorated with frescoes by the important Czech Baroque painter J. L. Kracker. The altars and the pulpit are decorated with valuable handicrafts from the workshop of Jozef Hartman, a Košice carver, and are a rare example of Baroque sculpture in eastern Slovakia. The main altar is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. In the center of the altar superstructure is a picture of the Virgin Mary.

Dubnica opal mines

Located on the territory of Slanské vrchy between the villages of Zlatá Baňa and Červenica. Slovak opals are highly valued on world markets for their unique properties - the so-called opalescence, that is, a perfect play of colors. No written data are preserved about the beginnings of precious opal mining in Slovakia. In the summer of 2015, they opened a mine for visitors through the renovated entrance to the Jozef tunnel. A 1.2-kilometer route is open to the public. Diving is also possible in the flooded areas of the mine. The mining corridors have a total of about 24 kilometers and 17 horizons, five of which are flooded.
