The ruins of the Castle and the Kowalska Tower in

Nowy Sącz
Culture
Settlement

The ruins of the Castle and the Smith Tower in Nowy Sącz are one of the most important monuments of the city. The royal castle in Sądecki was erected by King Casimir the Great in the years 1350-1360 on the slope within the city fortifications, at the fork of two rivers: the Dunajec and the Kamienica. In the past, it had two corner towers, a tower, a residential building and an outer bailey. The damage made during the wars and fires in the 17th and 18th centuries caused the stronghold to fall into ruin, but in the 18th and early 20th centuries attempts were made to reconstruct it, and in 1938 the Museum of the Sądecki Region was established here. During the occupation, the Germans turned the castle into a barracks and ammunition store, which in 1945 blew up several soldiers of the Peasant Battalions, as a result of which the monument was almost completely destroyed. To this day, only the remains of the perimeter walls and the reconstructed Blacksmith Tower have survived, and there is a municipal park in the area of the ruins.
